UT MARA debating society of Universiti Teknologi MARA, will be hosting this year Australs from July 2 to July 9. The Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship (”Australs”) is the world's second largest debating tournament and equal in prestige to the World University Debating Championship. Over its thirty-year history it has developed from a competition purely between Australian teams, to involving initially just , and then all of . It now attracts around 300 competitors each year from around the Asia-Pacific region. The tournament is considered the most intellectually demanding in the world, and is recognized for its high standards of debating and adjudicating. Debaters have half an hour to prepare a case on topics ranging from regional politics, international economic policy, sport, culture, religion and philosophy.
AKTEL - Drishty DebateChampionship 2007
Drishty Chitagong recently organized The 'AKTEL Debate Championship, 07'. The one week long program included 7th inter school English debate competition and 1st Inter university English debate competition. Nine best English medium schools of the port city Chitagong took part in this competition including , , , , , , , and , The grand final of this competition was held on 18th May at the hall room of . Drishty also organised 1st Inter-university English debate competition for the very first time in Chitagong. The University of Chitagong, CUET, USTC, , , International Islamic University, Chitagong, and took part in this competition. The Final of Inter-university Debate which was presided over by Dr. Mohit Ul Alam, writer and teacher, English Dept, Chitagong University. In this debate the wining team was and Technology (USTC). The debaters are Afroza Sultana and Yakub Ali. The 1st runner up team was represented by Nasir Uddin and Jewel Chy.
UT MARA wins The 14th All Asian Debate Championships 2007
Universiti Teknologi MARA, won the 14th All-Asians Intervarsity Debating Championship recently. Hosted by , the tournament was held from 7th to 14th May 2007. On the motion that "This House Would Partition ", UT MARA beat Universiti Malaya in the Grand Finals by a landslide 9-0 unanimous decision. The team consisted of Adiba Shareen Al-Ayubi, Amir Zharif Abdullah, and Danial Amir, all of whom are undergraduates from the Faculty of Law. Danial Amir was named Best Speaker of the Grand Finals and also won the Overall Best Speaker prize, thus retaining the title within UT MARA for two consecutive years. Meanwhile, Amir Zharif was ranked 4th Best Speaker in Asia.UT MARA is the first all-Malay team that has ever won the Asian Championship.
BRB Cables and NDF BD 3rd National Debate Festival'07
BRB cables in association with National Debate Federation of Bangladesh (NDF BD) arranged a two-day debate competition in Kushtia. The programme titled “BRB Cables NDF BD 3rd National Debate Festival'07,” brought debate to Kushtia in an unprecedented form. The inauguration ceremony was held on May 18. Chief guest at the programme was Mahfuz Anam, editor, The Daily Star. Special guests were Prof. AFM Yusuf Haider, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dhaka University; Mohammad Mojibur Rahman, Chairman, BRB Group; Anisul Haque, Majedur Rahman, country director, Bank Alfalah Moinuddin Bishwash Babu, chairman, Bishwash Group; Enamul Haque, Managing Director, Ambition Plus Consultants Ltd and Nibha Rani Pathok, head mistress, Kushtia Zila School. The ceremony was presided over by Mohammad Nurul Islam, District Commissioner, Kushtia.The closing ceremony was held on May 19. Chief guest at the programme was Iqbal Shobhan Chowdhury, editor Bangladesh Observer. Special guests were Mohammad Safayet Hossain, General Secretary, NDF and others.
TIB-CUDS Inter-Department Debate Competition 2007
Mass communication and journalism department of became champion of the TIB-CUDS Inter-Department Debate Competition that ended at . The motion of the debate was 'Not terrorism but corruption makes the present world unstable'. In another debate titled 'Corruption and not politics is the major hindrance to encouraging foreign investment in ', Law department defeated finance and banking department. Dr Syed Manzurul Islam, professor of English department of , was present as chief guest at the concluding session of the competition organized jointly by Chitagong University Debating Society (CUDS), Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Sachetan Nagorik Committee, Chitagong at the business faculty auditorium. Debaters of 34 departments took part in the four-day-long competition where apart from parliamentary debate, open debate was also held. Manzurul Islam and Shariful Abedin, former president of CUDS, performed as the speakers in the final round of the English and Bangla debate.
The first Londonmet Inter-University Public Speaking Competition was held at the auditorium of the British Council on the 11th of May'2007. metropolitan university sponsored it and Excluded Production House in association with Dhaka University Debating Society organised it. Eight participants from seven different educational institutes participated in the competition. The judges of the competition were Mahmud Alam Bappy, Mehedi Hasan Tamim (ex president, DU debating society) and Shamsur Rahman Parvez (ex vice president, DU debating society). The topic for speaking was “Miles to go…before I sleep”. A quiz competition was held for the audience after participants delivered their speeches. The honorable Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Mr. S.M.A. Fayez arrived at the venue for the prize giving ceremony. Mofazzel Hossain Sumon of was announced first in the competition and he won himself a personal computer. Sajid Mahbub of came second and won a cell phone and Sanjeeb Hossain of stood third and won a digital camera. Ten members from the audience who performed well in the quiz competition were gifted with dictionaries.
