Biography

George was born in 1881. He was the son of William Martin and Ann Frazier. He married Attree Burnham. They took over the property "Hillwood" following the death of George's father and mother in 1912 and 1914 respectively.

George and Attree had only one child, Willie, who was drowned in a dam on the property "Hillwood" in 1920, at eight years of age. George and Attree were devastated and Attree never really got over the shock and was very ill for many years. She died in 1932 aged forty-two years.

In 1930, during the depression years, George Martin invited his nephew, William Quinnell, and family to live in a house on an adjacent property to "Hillwood" which George had purchased to increase his acreage. Following Attree's death, the Quinnell family went to live at "Hillwood" with Uncle George.

In 1940, misfortune struck the Quinnell family. Mrs Vera Quinnell slipped off a stage at the woolshed and broke her leg. Although she was rushed to hospital, the leg became poisoned and had to be amputated and she died at the relatively early age of thirty-nine years.

Her eldest daughter, Dulcie Quinnell, married Gordon Whan (a son of Frances Martin) and it is noted that Dulcie and Gordon lived at "Hillwood" for several more years

George Frederick Martin was born in 1882 near Black Mountain, in the Armidale Region, Colony of New South Wales. He was the son of William Martin and Ann (Hannah) Thompson. ^[1]

In about 1910, George F. Martin married Miss Attree Burnham, b: 1889 in New South Wales, Australia. The couple lived in the Armidale region, NSW, Australia. They had at least one child, who tragically died at 8 years old:

Thomas William Martin, b: 1912; d: 18 Nov. 1920 at 8 years old

Attree (Burnham) Martin died on April 26, 1932 at 42 years old. ^[2]

George Frederick Martin survived her passing and lived in Armidale, New South Wales, until his death on Christmas Day 1952. He was buried next to his deceased wife and son in the Deeping Grove Private Cemetery, Saumarez, Armidale Regional Council, New South Wales, Australia. ^[3]
